When the admirals of the Russian Imperial Navy Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev set sail on an expedition to the southern hemisphere in July 1819 to map Antarctica an integral part of the crew was a graduate of the Academy of Arts Pavel Mikhailov, who received instructions from Alexei Olenin, president of the Academy: “You must pay close attention that everything you depict is the most faithful rendition of the objects you see. For this reason, you must by no means draw from memory.” Thus began Mikhailov’s career to document through paintings and drawings the lands and peoples of the southern hemisphere. The quality of the artist’s work is what comes forth in this catalogue, and his paintings and drawings can now take their place in the history of art. 143 pp., 9 3/8 x 8 5/8 ins., 24.5 x 22.5 cm., 31 b-&-w illus., 178 color, sewn cl., Rus. or ENGLISH.
